How long does the CRA take to process a tax return?
Short answer
How long does the CRA take to process a tax return? Its service standard is a notice of assessment within 2 weeks for returns filed online and within 12 weeks for paper returns, counted from when it receives the return. Non-resident returns can take up to 16 weeks. A refund is released right after assessment, so direct deposit usually lands within the same window.

How long does the CRA take to process a tax return? The standards
The CRA measures processing time from the day it receives your return and any documents it asked for, to the day it issues your notice of assessment. Its published service standards for individual returns are below. They are targets, not guarantees, and they apply to returns filed on time.
The same CRA page also states a broader aim of processing 95% of returns within 4 weeks when filed electronically and within 8 weeks when filed on paper. Read together, the 2-week and 12-week figures are the service standards shown by the CRA's processing-times tool, while the 95% line describes how most returns are handled overall. Either way, online filing is several times faster.
Online vs paper vs non-resident returns
The gap between 2 and 12 weeks comes mostly from how the return reaches the CRA. An online return arrives as data that automated checks can read immediately. A paper return first has to be delivered, opened and entered into the CRA's systems before those same checks can start, and in March and April that intake queue is at its longest.
If you still file on paper, our paper tax return guide covers where to mail it and how to avoid returns being sent back. For most people, switching to NETFILE is the single biggest thing they can do to shorten the wait.
How long for a non-resident return?
The CRA processes non-resident returns within 16 weeks. People who live outside Canada are asked to wait 16 weeks after filing before contacting the CRA about a refund, compared with 12 weeks for people in Canada.
How long does the CRA take to deposit a tax refund?
The refund is released when the return is assessed, so the deposit timeline and the assessment timeline are almost the same thing. With direct deposit, the NOA shows the words Direct deposit and the payment goes to your bank account. Without it, a cheque is mailed separately to the address on file, which adds however long the post takes.
The CRA does not publish a separate number of days for deposits versus cheques. What it does say is that direct deposit puts money into your account and cheques go by mail, so the difference is delivery time plus the risk of a lost or misaddressed cheque. You can sign up through your CRA account or your bank; see CRA direct deposit.
CRA refund timeline for an online return
As a worked example using the 2026 season: a return sent through NETFILE on Monday, March 2, 2026 had a service-standard date of Monday, March 16, 2026 for its notice of assessment. With direct deposit on file, the refund would normally follow on or shortly after that date. The same return mailed on paper that day had a standard of 12 weeks, which runs to Monday, May 25, 2026.
What slows a return down
Most returns that miss the standard do so for one of the reasons below. Several of them are within your control.
| Cause | Why it adds time | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Filing on paper | Mail and data entry before checks begin | File through NETFILE |
| Filing after the deadline | Late returns fall outside the service standard | File by April 30, 2027 for 2026 returns |
| Several years filed at once | The CRA assesses them together | File each year as soon as you can |
| Pre-assessment review | The CRA waits for your receipts | Keep receipts ready; reply through Submit documents |
| Missing or mismatched slips | Amounts do not match what employers and banks sent | Wait for all slips; check them in your CRA account |
| Deceased, bankruptcy or non-resident return | Excluded from the regular standard | Allow up to 16 weeks or more |
If your return is past the standard and you are not sure why, the CRA refund delay page explains holds, offsets and reviews in detail.
When will I get my tax refund in Canada in 2027?
For 2026 returns filed in 2027, the CRA has not yet announced the NETFILE opening date or any change to its standards. In recent years NETFILE opened in the last full week of February, and the 2026 season opened on February 23. Until the CRA says otherwise, plan on the same 2-week online and 12-week paper standards.
Filing on opening day does not guarantee the fastest refund if your slips are not all in. The CRA matches your return against information slips, so filing before a late T5 or T4A has reached the CRA can lead to a reassessment later. Filing in March with all slips in hand is often the smoother route.
When to follow up
Check your status in your CRA account first; the progress tracker shows received, in process or assessed. Contact the CRA only after 12 weeks from filing if you live in Canada, or 16 weeks if you live abroad. The CRA refund status page explains what each status means, and the CRA tax return timeline shows how processing fits with reviews and reassessments.
Common questions
How long does it take to get a tax refund in Canada?
For an online return with direct deposit, usually about 2 weeks, since the CRA's standard is a notice of assessment within 2 weeks and the refund follows the assessment. Paper returns have a 12-week standard.
Is direct deposit faster than a cheque from the CRA?
Both are released at assessment, but a cheque then travels by mail and can be delayed or lost. Direct deposit removes that step.
Why is a paper tax return so much slower?
A paper return has to be mailed, opened and entered before the CRA's checks can run. That is why its standard is 12 weeks compared with 2 weeks online.
Does filing early get me a faster refund?
It can put you ahead of the April rush, but the standard is counted per return. Filing before all your slips arrive risks a later reassessment.
How long does the CRA take to process an amended return?
The target is 2 weeks for changes sent through Change my return or ReFILE. Mailed Form T1-ADJ requests take about 14 to 16 weeks, and complex requests up to 33 weeks.
