How long does the CRA take to process a disability tax credit application in 2026?
Short answer
As of October 2026, the CRA says a Form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate, may take up to 8 weeks to process, citing higher than normal intake; for a form received October 13, 2026, the target decision date is December 8, 2026. Applications needing more information from the practitioner or the applicant take longer. You can follow the disability tax credit status in your CRA account once the complete form is received.

How long does the CRA take to process a disability tax credit application?
The CRA's processing-times tool said in October 2026 that, because of higher than normal intake, a disability tax credit (DTC) application may take up to 8 weeks to process (CRA, Check processing times). The tool gives a target date for any day you enter: for a T2201 received on October 13, 2026, it showed December 8, 2026.
That 8-week figure is a target, not a guarantee. The CRA says some applications are complex, meaning it needs clarification from the medical practitioner or supporting documents from the applicant, and those take longer. The same up-to-8-weeks wording has appeared in the tool since at least September 2025.

The clock starts when the CRA has both parts of the form. On the digital route, that is when the practitioner submits Part B using your reference number, which stays valid for 12 months and works once. On paper, it is when the complete signed form reaches the Jonquière, Sudbury or Winnipeg tax centre.
How do I check my disability tax credit status?
Sign in to your CRA account and look under the disability tax credit information in the benefits and credits area. The CRA says the status appears there once your complete application has been received (CRA, How to apply).
- If no status shows after two or three weeks on the digital route, ask your practitioner whether they submitted Part B. A Part A with no Part B is not a complete application.
- If you mailed the form, allow extra time for mail and scanning before the status appears.
- Once a decision is made, the notice of determination is posted in your CRA account, and you are told by email if you registered for email notifications, or by mail otherwise.
- If the target date from the processing-times tool has passed and nothing has changed, contact the CRA through the options on its official contact page.
Trouble signing in is a separate problem from the application itself; our CRA My Account guide covers registration and access.

Why is my DTC processing time longer than 8 weeks?
The most common reason is a request for more information. The CRA may write to the practitioner with follow-up questions, or ask you for records, and the file waits until the answers arrive. A slow reply from a busy clinic can add weeks.
- Part B left incomplete, unsigned, or completed for a category the practitioner is not allowed to certify.
- Mismatched routes: Part A sent online and Part B on paper, or the reverse. The CRA wants both parts sent the same way.
- The form uploaded through the Submit documents service, which the CRA does not accept for T2201 forms.
- Dates that do not line up, such as an impairment start year that conflicts with other answers.
- Seasonal volume: the processing-times tool has carried a higher than normal intake notice through 2025 and 2026.

The form-completion details that prevent most of these problems are on our T2201 form page, and the order of steps is on the disability tax credit application guide.
Does applying with my tax return slow down the DTC processing time?
It can slow down the tax return. The CRA advises that sending the DTC application at the same time as your return may delay your assessment. The better order is to file your return on time without the disability amount, then apply separately.
Filing first does not cost you the credit. Once the DTC is approved, the CRA can apply it to the current year and up to 10 previous years, either automatically if you consented in Part A or at your written request. For a return due April 30, 2027, there is no reason to hold it back while a T2201 is pending.
What happens after the CRA approves the DTC?
The notice of determination states the years you are eligible for and whether the approval has an end date. If there is an end date, the CRA flags it on your notice of assessment one year ahead and again in the year it expires, and a new T2201 will be needed then.
Past-year changes run on a second timeline. In October 2026 the CRA's targets were within 2 weeks for adjustments requested online through Change my return or ReFILE, within 19 weeks for paper or phone requests, and within 35 weeks for complex adjustments. The amounts and routes are on our DTC retroactive claims page.
If the answer is a denial, you have 90 days from the date on the notice of determination to file an objection, or you can ask for a review with new medical information. Check the reason given against the DTC eligibility rules before deciding which to use.
Common questions
Can I speed up my DTC application?
Not by asking. What helps is sending a complete, consistent form by one route, preferably the digital one, and making sure your practitioner answers any CRA follow-up questions quickly.
Will the CRA call my doctor about my DTC application?
The CRA may contact the practitioner who signed Part B for clarification or send them a letter with questions. Your consent on Part A allows this.
My DTC application shows no status in My Account. Was it lost?
Not necessarily. Status only appears once the complete application is received, so a missing Part B or a mailed form still in transit shows nothing.
How will I know the DTC was approved?
You receive a notice of determination, posted in your CRA account and flagged by email if you registered for email notifications, or sent by mail. It lists the years you are eligible for.
How long after DTC approval do I get the refund for past years?
If you consented to automatic adjustments, reassessments follow the approval. For changes you request yourself, the CRA's October 2026 targets were 2 weeks online and 19 weeks on paper.
