International student tax return in Canada: do you need to file?

Short answer

Whether you need an international student tax return in Canada depends on your residency status, not your study permit. Most full-time students who move here with significant residential ties are residents and file like newcomers, reporting world income from their arrival date. Filing lets you recover tax withheld from a campus job and record unused tuition for later years.

01What decides your filing rules

Do international students file taxes in Canada?

Yes, most do, and the ones who skip it usually leave money behind. An international student who earned money in Canada, had tax withheld, or wants to use tuition credits later needs to file a T1 return. The rules that apply depend on which of four residency categories you fall into.

Residency for tax is not the same as your immigration status. A study permit holder can be a full resident of Canada for tax, while a Canadian citizen living abroad can be a non-resident. The CRA looks at your ties to Canada and the time you spend here.

What is your residency status as a student?

The CRA sorts international students into four categories. Most students who come for a full program, rent a place and open a bank account are residents, because the home in Canada is a significant tie.

The four residency categories for international students
StatusWhen it appliesWhat you report
ResidentYou establish significant residential ties, such as a home in CanadaWorld income from your arrival date; follow newcomer rules
Non-residentNo significant ties and less than 183 days in Canada in the yearOnly certain Canadian-source income, on a non-resident return
Deemed resident183 days or more in Canada, and not a resident of your home country under a tax treatyWorld income for the whole year; federal tax only, no provincial tax
Deemed non-residentSignificant ties to Canada, but a treaty makes you resident elsewhereSame rules as a non-resident

Secondary ties such as a Canadian bank account, a provincial health card, a driver's licence and personal belongings also count. If your case is unclear, for example you study one term and return home, send Form NR74 and the CRA will give its opinion on your status.

When must an international student file a return?

You must file if you owe tax for the year. You should also file, even with no tax owing, in any of these cases:

  • An employer withheld income tax from your pay (shown in box 22 of your T4) and you want it back.
  • You received a T2202 and want the CRA to record your tuition for future years.
  • You want to be assessed for the quarterly credit the CRA now calls the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which newcomers apply for with Form RC151.
  • You plan to stay in Canada after graduating and want RRSP room from your student-job income on record.

Residents file by April 30 of the following year, so a 2026 return is due April 30, 2027. The CRA processes non-resident returns within 16 weeks, compared with its 2-week standard for resident returns filed online.

What if I had no income as an international student?

File anyway if you are a resident. A zero-income return costs nothing, lets the CRA assess you for the quarterly credit, and records your tuition. If you skip the first year, the T2202 amount is not lost, but you will need to file that year's return later to get it onto your record.

Money sent by family abroad to pay living costs is not income for Canadian tax, so it does not go on the return.

If you do not work and have no social insurance number, you can still file. The CRA accepts a paper return with a note explaining why the SIN is missing, and if Service Canada cannot issue you a SIN, the CRA may give you a temporary tax number (TTN) instead. NETFILE accepts a TTN starting with 01 or 03, so with one you can file online.

Can international students claim tuition on a Canadian tax return?

Yes. Residents claim eligible fees paid to a Canadian post-secondary institution using the T2202, Tuition and Enrolment Certificate, which schools post online by the end of February. The federal credit is 14% of eligible fees for 2026, and the tuition credit is one of the amounts newcomers can claim in full, not prorated by days.

Because international fees are high and student income is usually low, most students cannot use the whole credit in the year they pay. The unused amount carries forward with no expiry, so a graduate who stays and starts a full-time job in Canada can use it against their own tax later. The tuition tax credit page explains the carryforward and transfer rules, and our T2202 guide shows where to find the eligible amount on the slip.

Can international students get a tax refund in Canada?

Yes, if too much tax was withheld from your pay. Payroll withholding assumes you work all year, so a student who works part-time or only for a few months often has more withheld than they owe. Filing is the only way to get it back.

Worked example: a student who arrived in August 2026

Wei arrives on August 20, 2026, signs a lease for the school year and becomes a resident that day. He earns $6,000 from a campus job, and his T2202 shows $18,000 of eligible tuition. His employer withheld some income tax.

Employment incomeT4 box 14$6,000
Federal tax before tuitionIncome is below the prorated amount$0
Tuition used this yearNothing needed to reduce tax$0; $18,000 carried forward

Because Wei owes no federal tax, the federal tax withheld from his pay comes back as a refund, and his province runs a similar calculation for provincial tax. His full $18,000 tuition amount is recorded for future years.

  1. Decide your residency status using the table above, or send Form NR74 if you are unsure.
  2. Get a social insurance number if you work; you need one to file online.
  3. Download your T2202 from the school's student portal and collect your T4 and any T4A for scholarships.
  4. Use NETFILE-certified software as a resident, entering your date of entry. Deemed residents cannot use NETFILE; they file on paper or have a tax preparer send the return through EFILE.
  5. Enter slips, claim tuition and let the software prorate the basic personal amount by days in Canada.
  6. Leave the access code blank on your first return and add a Canadian bank account for direct deposit.
  7. File by April 30 and keep your notice of assessment, which shows your unused tuition.

What happens to your taxes when you leave Canada after graduating?

In the year you leave for good, you file a final return reporting world income up to your departure date, and the date you leave ends your residency. Form NR73, Determination of Residency Status (leaving Canada), asks the CRA for its opinion if your situation is unclear, for example if you keep a lease or bank account here.

Refunds from that final year are paid by direct deposit to a Canadian account or by cheque, so keep your Canadian account open until the notice of assessment arrives.

Step by step

  1. Determine residency status

Use the CRA's four categories or send Form NR74 for an opinion.

  2. Collect slips

Send the return by NETFILE or on paper and keep the notice of assessment.

Common questions

Do international students pay tax on scholarships in Canada?

Post-secondary scholarships and bursaries are generally not taxable for students enrolled as full-time qualifying students. Part-time students can exempt only the amount of tuition plus program material costs, with a $500 basic exemption on awards above that.

Can my parents abroad claim my tuition?

Only if they file a Canadian return and owe Canadian tax. The tuition amount stays with you as a carryforward in most cases.

Do I need a SIN to file as an international student?

You need a SIN, or a CRA temporary tax number (TTN) starting with 01 or 03, to file online. If you have neither because you do not work, you can file on paper and explain why the number is missing.

Is work on a co-op term taxed differently for international students?

No. Co-op wages are employment income reported on a T4, taxed like any other job, and count toward RRSP room.

When will I get my international student tax refund?

For a resident return filed online, the CRA's standard is a notice of assessment within 2 weeks, with the refund following. Non-resident returns are processed within 16 weeks.

How much tax refund do international students get in Canada?

There is no set amount. Your refund is the income tax withheld from your pay (box 22 of your T4) minus the tax you actually owe, so a student whose income stays below the credits they can claim, like Wei in the example above, gets back all the federal tax withheld. Tuition credits do not add to a refund, because they are non-refundable.

Do international students pay Canadian tax on foreign income?

If you are a resident, yes: Canada taxes your world income from the day you became resident, such as interest on a bank account back home, and you may claim a federal foreign tax credit on Form T2209 for tax the other country charged on that income. Before that day, you report only certain Canadian income, such as wages earned in Canada. Money your family sends to cover living costs is not income.

Can international students file taxes for free?

Yes. Volunteers in the CRA's Community Volunteer Income Tax Program prepare returns for free for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation, which describes many students. Several NETFILE-certified software products are also free to use.
